Dani Olmo offers hope – but is he the right player for Barcelona?
Despite all the financial adversity, Barca have apparently managed to acquire a top player. The Blaugrana are reportedly close to signing Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig. Rumor has it that the Spanish European champions have been looking for a new challenge for some time. And it would be perfect for him to return to his roots. After all, he once played for Barcelona in his youth.
What’s going well? What’s going wrong? And what needs to happen? This is how Europe’s top clubs perform in the transfer marketHowever, what doesn’t fit is the huge transfer fee that would be required to acquire Olmo. RB Leipzig reportedly want €60 million – an amount Barcelona probably can’t afford.
And even if the Catalans could do that, Olmo doesn’t seem to be the player they need. As an attacking midfielder or false nine, he would be a reinforcement in an area where Barca already have a very good and wide base. Ilkay Gundogan, Pedri, Gavi and Fermin Lopez can all play this role excellently. And if Olmo were deployed on the left, it would not be the right position to make the most of his abilities.
So Barcelona may be using the limited resources they have on the wrong man. Yes, it’s a new summer, but the same problems prevail at Barca. Overconfidence and poor management are still rampant at the Catalan club.
