A renowned Scottish golf club has been given the green light to proceed with a major expansion plan – which will include the construction of a new course on the estate.
The club has only been in existence for 15 years, but it gained instant fame thanks to the vision of golf course designer David Maclay-Kidd, the man behind the famous Bandon Dunes in Oregon. USA,
Maclay-Kidd was born in Renfrew, just outside Glasgow, and in 1999 was tasked with creating the first genuine Scottish-style links course in the US.
Ten years later he was called back Homeland To get your hands on Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, near Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula.
When developing his original layout, Maclay-Kidd took care to cause as little damage as possible to the land – the site enjoys the highest level of environmental protection in Britain, with status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) – and it became the first GEO-certified course in Britain.
To this day, the use of fertilisers and any drainage or irrigation systems are prohibited and native sheep are permitted to graze the fairways, giving credence to the club’s claim that it is “the world’s most natural course”.
Now, this iconic links venue will host another course that lives up to the same principles.
Plan Permission has been granted for a second 18-hole track at the Village at Machrihanish Dunes golf resort, which will also feature new practice facilities with indoor and outdoor hitting bays and a nine-acre short-game area.
This ambitious project, led by American owner Southworth, will also see the construction of a third hotel and 50 new hotels. luxury Remote beach cottages for golfers to enjoy.
