Golf fans are convinced Rory McIlroy had no idea he was taking on a Hollywood superstar on the driving range.
McIlroy witnessed the bizarre incident while he was on the driving range preparing for this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
McIlroy was warming up on the range ahead of Wednesday’s pro-am, which will see tour professionals take to the course alongside their celebrity counterparts.
And fans believe a video that has gone viral on social media has revealed just how little the golf star knows about pop culture.
A video that surfaced online shows Spider-Man star Tom Holland practising with the world number three.
“Hi mate, excuse me, I’m Tom,” Holland, 28, said, extending his hand to McIlroy’s bay side, introducing himself.
McIlroy was taken aback by the exchange and replied, “Hello Tom, how are you?”, although he made no reference to Holland’s stardom.
Fans couldn’t believe the video and thought McIlroy had no idea he was talking to an on-screen superhero.
“Rory doesn’t know who Tom Holland is,” one user wrote on social media.
While another said: “Rory clearly has no idea who he is!”

A third teased: “Rory was totally drunk and didn’t realise he was Spider-Man.”
And a fourth joked: “Rory didn’t realise who he was without the mask.”
Rory had no trouble recognising the other players, with the Northern Irishman even sharing a hug with recently retired tennis star Andy Murray.
Other familiar faces also took to the field, including Gareth Bale, Ben Stokes, Ben Foster, Robbie Fowler and Stuart Broad.
Holland was hard to spot, though, as fans kept stopping him for selfies and autographs.
While world number 12 Tommy Fleetwood definitely knew who the Marvel actor was, and brought his young son along to meet Holland, dressed as Spider-Man.
