The joy was short-lived for Steve Clarke’s side, who equalised for Switzerland 13 minutes later. A horrific mistake by Ralston to Gunn was picked on by Shaqiri and without thinking, he armed his foot and shot past the Scottish goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
The goal gave Switzerland wings, kicking them into another gear and laying siege to Scotland. Ndoye forced Gan into a save and was on the receiving end again following a corner, this time beating his goal, although the play was ruled out for offside.
