Bob McIntyre regretted turning the air blue at Kingsbarns after double bogeying the last hole of the second round of the Dunhill Links Championship on Friday.

But while vowing to try to clean up his language, Oban Ace refused to give any guarantee that he would swear with his breath in future.

Sky commentators were forced to apologize to viewers after McIntyre used the F-word several times and the 28-year-old admitted it was a bad look.

But he also claimed that it is extremely difficult to keep his lips closed when he is angry with himself.

McIntyre, who posted a third-round 65 at the Old Course yesterday to move to 12-under-par, said: “I’m trying my best to improve.

“But, look, it’s live sport and it’s the heat of the fight. You wouldn’t put a microphone on the football pitch or at the referee because you would hear bad language.

“The other side of it is that I’m Scottish and it’s part of our vocabulary. It’s hard, but I’m conscious of it and I’m trying my best not to do it too much.

“But, if the microphone is there and it’s capturing me talking to Mike (Bureau, his caddy), I’m not going to change the way I talk to him in a normal conversation just because it’s in my face.

“But I’m trying not to react to shots as much as I have been.

“Yesterday I was trying my best and I double bogeyed 18, so I was going to be angry. And what will I do when I get angry? I’m probably going to swear at myself.

“This isn’t on anyone else – this is on me. I’m going to swear at myself and say things to myself.

“I don’t mean to offend anyone, but this is the heat of the fight. I’m red-lining. I’m on the edge. This is going to come up again and again.”

Meanwhile, Tyrrell Hatton and Nicholas Colsaerts go head-to-head at the Old Course today after emerging as the stars of the £3.75million event.

Colsaarts of Belgium, without a card and without a DP World Tour win for five years, made the shot of the tournament on his way to a 65 at Kingsbarns.

The 41-year-old followed up his albatross on the 16th hole with a birdie on his seventh hole to establish a five-shot lead over the field.

But 32-year-old Englishman Hatton came back strongly to equal compatriot Ross Fisher’s course record 61 at the Old Course and finish the day at 22-under, one shot ahead of his nearest rival.

A two-time Dunhill champion and two-time joint runner-up, Hatton has an astonishing record at the Home of Golf, where he has carded 67 or better at least 10 times.

But he has not always been a fan of golf’s most prestigious venue, explaining: “When I played in the St Andrews Links Trophy I struggled in my first two appearances at Dunhill.

“But it has been great for me since winning in 2016. “It’s a special place to play golf.”

Meanwhile, Colsaerts said: “My Albatross felt very special. That 6-iron turned out to be perfect. I am really very happy.”
