But first, he was tasked with firing bullets at the body of former politician Bowles for 20 seconds straight.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Bowles, 57, wore a padded belt to protect himself, and the show’s doctor was on standby.

Co-presenter Susanna Reid, 53, said: “We must say that our doctor Phil is on hand if Ed needs any help.”

As the boxer started punching the TV host, Susanna was shocked and said, “Oh my god. Slow down a bit.”

Eubanks, 34, responded: “I’m trying not to get too down.”

Eubanks pulled back his punches as Balls writhed in pain, but miraculously he stayed on his feet and absorbed the punishment until the final bell.

The former WBA world champion told the ITV host that he was impressed with the way he dealt with the punches.

And Susanna joked that the belt seemed quite low.

Ed replied: “I kept pushing it down, I kept thinking, ‘Put it down further, put it down further’. I was a bit worried I might have to change my surname.”

Eubank admitted he didn’t hit as hard as he could, saying: “I mean, I’m not going to hit the guy on national TV.”

Balls later said: “I can’t speak very well at the moment.”

Susanna joked: “It’s like you’ve just been punched and knocked unconscious.”

When the show returned from an ad break, Ed appeared to be regaining his composure.

Eubank hasn’t boxed since a rematch win over 35-year-old Liam Smith last September.

So by the time he takes on 34-year-old Polish fighter Kamil Szeremeta in Riyadh, he will have been out of the ring for over a year.

“This is a very important fight for me to get back into the rhythm, I’m 34, I’ll be 35 next month, no this month in September,” Eubank said.

“So it’s kind of like, we’re coming to the final chapter, my last three or four years in the game.

“I have to make a statement, I have to go out there and perform and win these big fights every time because these are my legacy fights. That’s what people remember me for.”

Eubank has been linked with a big fight against 34-year-old Canelo Alvarez and the possibility of a rematch with 35-year-old Billy Joe Saunders.

But when asked if he could beat Szeremeta, he said: “Absolutely. He’s a tough opponent from Poland, he’s the kind of player who is perfect for a player who has been out of the ring for a year to come back.”

“He’s a strong player, he has a very good record. I think he has 24 wins and two losses. Yes, I’m excited.”
