Boxing great Frank Bruno is undergoing scans in hospital amid fears his brain is “slowly deteriorating”.
The former world heavyweight champion’s doctors are trying to determine whether a blow to the head during his 14-year career caused long-term damage.
Frank’s daughter, Rachel, said: “We recently learned that his brain is slowly deteriorating.
“They are only scanning and testing at this time. Obviously it probably didn’t help, given the impact of his career and his frequent head injuries.
“We don’t know how fast his brain is going to deteriorate.
“It’s sad but we are a strong family and we want to cherish these moments.”
Speaking on the Amazon documentary Four Kings, Frank, 62, said: “I achieved my dream.
“I won the world championship. I have some beautiful kids. What more do you want?”
Last night a source close to Frank insisted: “Frank is in a great place at the moment and is feeling fitter and healthier than he has in years.
Each week he will talk about his career and work in three or four programs.
“All retired boxers have regular checkups, and Frank is no different.”
The four-part documentary details the careers of Frank, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn.
It also looks at the dangers of the sport – including the extensive brain damage suffered by Michael Watson during his fight with Eubanks, and the life-changing injuries suffered by Gerald McClellan in his fight with Benn.
Frank is no stranger to adversity, having been admitted to Goodmayes Hospital in North East London 20 years ago.
He was readmitted again in 2021 when he reached his lowest point during the lockdown.
His generosity, Frank bruno Foundation, campaign on mental Health issues.
“It’s going from strength to strength,” the source said.
