Ryan Garcia has suddenly announced his retirement from boxing.
The 25-year-old former WBC interim lightweight champion made the announcement in a series of tweets on Wednesday.
“I am officially retired,” Garcia wrotethree hours later Saying“I just want to drop my meme coin and run away and love everyone from a distance.”
The American was clearly angry as he awaits a decision from the New York State Athletic Commission regarding a potential ban.
This comes after he returned positive results for two drug tests in May, which were samples taken the day before and on the day of his recent win against Devin Haney.
“Mom has cancer, I’m getting sued, my supplements were adulterated, I’m getting divorced, there’s always bullshit on the internet, Devin has been trying to take away my winnings for years, I’ve been through all kinds of things, I still love God, that’s all,” Garcia tweeted on Wednesday.
Garcia later couple “Boxing would be fine without me,” he said, “but it still sucks that I used to enjoy the sport … and punching people was fun.”
Garcia’s majority decision win over Haney in late April has long been mired in controversy, as two supplements taken by Garcia reportedly “contained the presence of the banned substance ostarine,” according to the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory. ESPN,
Ostarine was later found in Garcia’s B-sample as well, ESPN reported.
Throughout the episode, Garcia repeatedly and vehemently denied using the substance.
“This confirms what we have said consistently: Ryan was the victim of supplement contamination and has never knowingly used any banned or performance-enhancing substances,” his lawyers said in a statement. USA Today,
“Any claims to the contrary, which question Ryan’s integrity as a clean warrior, are categorically false and defamatory.”
According to Boxing Scene, it was reported on Tuesday that Garcia will find out this week whether or not he will be banned by the NYSAC. Lance Pugmire,
Earlier that day, Haney had also spoken on X (formerly known as Twitter), where he hinted at a future bout against Garcia and expressed his belief that his opponent would be suspended.
He said, “I’ll take some time off… spend some of my money… travel the world and come back in two years after Ryan’s suspension and we can compete again.” wrote,
“Throughout his career Ryan has voluntarily submitted to numerous tests, all of which have come back negative, demonstrating his commitment to fair and clean competition,” his lawyers said.
“Additionally, multiple negative tests prior to the fight against Haney also confirm his clean record.
“Extremely small amounts of ostarine, equivalent to one-billionth of a gram, were found in his samples and in a clean hair sample, proving contamination rather than intentional ingestion.
“Recent test results reiterate this point.”
If Garcia’s decision to retire proves to be final, it appears he is eyeing a career change in the future.
He said, “You guys can catch me anywhere, but as far as boxing is concerned, I don’t know.” tweeted,
“There is so much corruption here that I am over it…I can act or sing…I will still keep training, but I am hurt and fed up with it and everything.”
