Rumours of a super-fight between two generational stars of British boxing have been circulating for a number of years, but talks have always stalled.

Joshua, 34, will challenge his fellow Briton Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight belt at Wembley on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Fury, 36, will face Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the other three recognised world titles, in December.

Hearn told the BBC: “I think the AJ-Fury fight will happen regardless of whether Fury wins or not.

“But the shape of the contest depends on their next two results.”

In June Joshua urged Fury to fight him while both boxers were “fresh”, but said he would not “sit around and wait” for the Gypsy King.

Asked if there was a timeframe of next year for that, Matchroom’s Hearn replied: “Yes, definitely.

“If AJ beats Dubois and Fury beats Usyk, you’ve got the biggest fight ever in the history of the sport.

“If one loses and the other wins, it’s still a terrible fight.”

Joshua has his eyes set on returning to the top of the boxing world this weekend.

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois: Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the huge world title fight at Wembley

If he beats Dubois, he will match greats Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko and Evander Holyfield by becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion.

The pair had to be separated when the promotion opened, as Frank Warren found himself between the two veterans as security guards restrained them during a one-on-one interview.

Dubois currently holds the IBF belt, which Usyk vacated in June, ending his reign as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years barely a month later.

Usyk was forced to relinquish the belt for a contracted rematch with Fury, after Fury suffered the first defeat of his career against the undefeated Ukrainian in May.

Joshua won his first world title in April 2016 with a second-round knockout win over Charles Martin.

After losing his unified title to Andy Ruiz Jr. in January 2019, he won the belt back from the Mexican boxer six months later.

But the Watford fighter then suffered two consecutive defeats at the hands of Usyk, putting his career in danger.
