Who is Liam Cameron?

Liam Cameron is a boxer from Sheffield who was born on 21 October 1990 – he is 33 years old at the time of writing this article.

His first professional fight was a six-round victory over Matt Scriven at Sheffield City Hall on 24 October 2009.

After winning nine fights in a row, he suffered his first defeat in a closely fought contest against Eric Ochieng, this time at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre in his hometown on 28 May 2011.

He held the Commonwealth middleweight belt from 2017 to 2018 and challenged for the super-middleweight version twice, in 2015 and 2016, but lost both times by unanimous decision.

But his career suffered a major blow when the Sheffield fighter was banned from British boxing for four years in 2018 after a cocaine metabolite was found in his body.

In 2020, his stepdaughter Tieghan died in a traffic accident – just two days before her 21st birthday.

Struggling to cope, Liam battled drug addiction and even survived an attempt on his life.

In 2023, he returned to boxing and began a four-fight winning streak.

He also completed a round-trip marathon from Sheffield to Manchester to raise money in tribute to Tiegan, as well as prove his fitness to return to the ring.

He will next face 33-year-old Lyndon Arthur of Manchester on Friday, June 21.

Speaking about his fundraising marathon, Liam told SunSport: “It was a really weird idea, me and my friend Hassan just wanted to see if we could do it.

“We wanted to break down the ‘Welcome to Manchester’ sign and return.

“We then decided to take it even further than a challenge and used it to raise £1,300 to buy a bench for Tieghan.

“It took the best part of 24 hours with only a bag full of flapjacks and the last 10 miles were hell.

“I’ve been through some bad times and tough trials, but those last few miles were something else.

Tyson Fury says ‘I still look good’ as he laughs off a night of drinking at a pub that left him falling on his face.

“Hassan and I were both crying, confused, in pain. It ended up like a therapy session.

I’m the underdog, the outsider, the fighter from a distance, but – especially in boxing – people love the guy and they want him to win

“But we somehow did it, and being able to do that physically and mentally told me that returning to boxing would be okay.”

Liam has always claimed his innocence, but wisely has shown no desire to court any controversy with the British Boxing Board of Control after regaining his licence.

Boxing has welcomed him into the light-heavyweight division, with Eddie Hearn hosting him on a Matchroom show at Sheffield Arena in March, and he will next headline a show on terrestrial TV.

He explained: “At the time I felt very lonely and I felt some people could have helped me a bit more, but I understand sport and it’s a business.

“Since my return, I feel like everyone who knows my story wants me to win.

“I’m the underdog, the outsider, the far-out fighter, but – especially in boxing – people love the guy and they want him to win.

“I first fell in love with boxing because of the Rocky movies, and I think people always like the fairy tale of the comeback more than the undefeated success.”

“I feel a bit sorry for Lyndon Arthur, he’s a Manchester player playing in a home show in Bolton, but I think I’ve got full support.”

When is Liam Cameron’s next fight?

Linden will return to the ring on Friday, June 21, 2024, where he will take on Liam Cameron.

The fight will take place in the light-heavyweight category.

Arthur wants to get back into world title contention, so he won’t want to risk his hopes to a weak Liam.

The bout will take place at the Tuffsheet Community Stadium, the home of Bolton Wanderers, and the ring walk for the main event is expected to begin at around 10.30am (IST).

Arthur vs Cameron will be shown live in the UK on Channel 5 and the channel’s streaming service My5.
